ABOUT US

Sound Minds is a user led charity and social enterprise transforming the lives of people experiencing mental ill health through participation in arts activities since 1992. We are a thriving community bound together by creativity and a shared belief in mutual learning and peer support.

Sound Minds reputation for developing and managing innovative projects has only been possible because service users run the organisation. The majority of our staff, directors and volunteers originally came to receive the service they now help to provide. Our governing documents require that service users are not in a minority on our Management board.

Services are mostly provided from a large suite of rooms in the basement of Battersea Methodist Mission and are focused on Wandsworth and surrounding boroughs. Facilites include a spacious rehearsal room with en suite recording facility, a smaller studio for recording mixing and video editing, a visual art studio, lounge, kitchen and a teaching studio. As well as the latest music making equipment we also have facilities for filmmaking and editing and a DJ set-up. Sound Minds services include film making and a range of arts and music activities to entertain and help to raise awareness around mental health.

Sound Minds is home to a number of bands including Gigantic Station, Bluesology, The legendary reggae band Channel One and the Sound Minds Jazz Collective. Accredited courses (Open College Network London) are offered in music production and filmmaking and we offer one to one lessons in drums, keyboards, singing,  bass and guitar. We also run a community choir and an art studio, the base for the depARTmental group of artists.

Sound Minds is the home of BaME service user group 'Canerows' who provide a range of peer support services including ward visiting, tuition to forensic services, a user led drop in (Mama Low's Kitchen), post discharge support and consultation. Our staff team  are skilled and experienced in both mental health and music and the arts.
